Illinois is teaching the public about AI
Computer Science is the core of AI, and as a result, initiatives such as the Amazon-Illinois Center on AI for Interactive Conversational Experiences and the IBM-Illinois Discovery Accelerator Institute are housed in Grainger Engineering. This impact goes beyond traditional initiatives - many researchers in Grainger Engineering collaboratively tackle AI initiatives. For example, Lav Varshney (associate professor of electrical & computer engineering) and Nishant Garg (assistant professor of civil & environmental engineering) used AI modeling to identify a formula for concrete that reduces carbon emissions by 40% while maintaining strength and durability.
The university offers open education courses that cover a variety of topics such as emerging technology, machine learning, and AI in medicine through Illinois Online. These courses are offered in a variety of formats and languages, and many are completely free. Availability of online courses allows flexibility, convenience, career advancement, and networking opportunities for all ages.

From understanding how cancer evolves, to improving the quality of care that AI is able to provide, Illinois has demonstrated the benefits of AI in the healthcare industry many times over. The Srinivasulu AI Center for Wellness will focus on harnessing artificial intelligence to cure metabolic diseases, specifically diabetes. Research endeavors and student organizations are just two ways that Illinois students have been a part of the conversation. As a constantly evolving technology, a fresh perspective from future leaders and professionals is crucial in ensuring that this technology evolves in a way that is useful to the next generation. AI @ UIUC is a student organization that continues to push the envelope in AI research by providing curious students with the right tools to explore AI-related questions. Additionally, the Beckman Institute offers many groups and labs related to AI that students can participate in such as the Biologically Informed Artificial Intelligence group and the Advanced Controls Research Laboratory.
Illinois is the bridge between foundational research and corporate breakthroughs
The Research Park inspires many AI-related projects by being the home to several startups specializing in AI and fostering community around AI topics. Two startups, Reconstruct and Prenosis, were highlighted in a recent Forbes article as AI entrepreneurs. Reconstruct uses actionable data analytics to empower smart construction and support project teams to proactively decide on control actions and keep their projects on time and on budget. Prenosis is developing technologies to decode the atypical human immune response.
