The Coordinated Science Laboratory Marks 75 Years of Innovation at Illinois
The Grainger College of Engineering Coordinated Science Laboratory celebrates 75 years in 2026 as one of the nation’s leading interdisciplinary research environments. The lab brings together approximately 150 faculty across 16 departments, supported by nearly $50 million in annual research funding from federal agencies, industry, the military, and private foundations. With strengths spanning circuits, computing, control, and communications, CSL continues to serve as a valuable research partner for companies tackling complex technical challenges.
“CSL has historically been a place that has taken on the challenge of finding solutions to society’s biggest problems,” William H. Sanders, former CSL director.
Industry collaboration has been central to CSL’s mission. Research at the lab spans artificial intelligence, microelectronics, cybersecurity, autonomous systems, quantum technologies, and communications. Through partnerships with leading companies and organizations, CSL helps translate research into practical applications and emerging technologies.
Major initiatives include collaborations with IBM through the IBM-Illinois Discovery Accelerator Institute, which supports research and workforce development in AI, hybrid cloud, and quantum computing. CSL also plays a key role in the Center for Advanced Electronics through Machine Learning, bringing together partners including Intel, Lockheed Martin, Samsung, and ASUS to advance semiconductor and electronics research using machine learning.
Since its founding in 1951, CSL has built a strong legacy of federally supported research through partnerships with the U.S. Department of Defense. That foundation continues to evolve through expanded corporate engagement and sponsored research initiatives that connect Illinois researchers and students with emerging industry needs.
“Over the past 70 years, CSL has undoubtedly shaped the way we live, work, and play,” Klara Nahrstedt, former CSL director.
For 75 years, CSL has connected faculty, students, and industry partners to move research into real-world applications while helping prepare the next generation of engineering and technology leaders. As CSL looks towards its next era of discovery, the laboratory continues to expand opportunities for industry collaboration, sponsored research, and student engagement across engineering and technology.
