Illinois makes breakthroughs in cancer research.

Just one of several research institutes and programs at Illinois, the Cancer Center at Illinois, has developed infrared spectroscopic imaging, new capabilities in IR instrumentation, new methods for analyzing spectral data, and high-throughput methods for pathology. Research is also being done in next generation imaging, pathways and mechanisms, cancer drug discovery, and engineered and natural model systems all to enable cancer-free lives.

Carle Illinois College of Medicine student Annabelle Shaffer is collaborating with researchers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Beckman Institute on a study that exams a large patient database of high school athletes and their concussion responses to look for better decisions for when it’s safe for an athlete to return to play. Data show the sport and symptoms from the concussion database is projected over the MRI control room at the Beckman Institute.

Illinois students are engaging in activities and societies.

Students are provided endless opportunities to engage in health science related clubs called registered students organizations. Undergraduates and graduates have the ability to participate in these clubs that help assist them in their future goals. A few undergraduate clubs include the Pre-Occupational Therapy Club, Pre-Physical Therapy Club, and the American Medical Student Association Pre-Med. These clubs allow those who are interested in going into a graduate or professional school to hone their skills and make connections. Graduates may join clubs such as the Public Health Professionals, Biomedical Engineering Society, and i-Made.
